Why is my Google Business Profile not ranking?
Your profile exists but competitors show up on Maps and you do not. Here are the 7 mistakes behind it — and the fix for each one.
A Google Business Profile that does not rank is almost never a mystery. It is one of a small set of fixable problems: wrong category, thin profile, weak reviews, inconsistent details, or a guideline violation. Work through these 7 fixes in order — most businesses see movement within a few weeks.
1. Your primary category is wrong
The primary category is the single biggest ranking signal you control. If you are a "Plumber" but your category says "General contractor", or a mold remediation company listed as a "Cleaning service", Google files you under the wrong searches. Check what category your top-ranking competitors use and match the most specific one that describes your core service.
2. Your profile is half empty
Empty services, no products, no attributes, no Q and A, no business description — every blank field is a ranking signal you are giving away. Google ranks complete profiles higher because they answer searchers better. Fill every field that applies to your business.
3. You have too few reviews — or you ignore them
Review count, rating, and review velocity are core local ranking factors. A competitor with 180 recent reviews will outrank you with 12 old ones, even if your service is better. Worse, unanswered reviews tell Google the business is inactive. Ask every happy customer for a review and reply to all of them.
4. Your photos are missing or generic
Profiles with real photos of the business, team, and work get far more actions — and Google notices the engagement. Stock photos or an empty gallery is a red flag. Upload real photos regularly: storefront, team, before/after work, vehicles.
5. Your name, address, and phone number do not match
If your website says "123 Main St, Suite 4" and your profile says "123 Main Street #4", and a directory says something else, Google loses confidence in which business is which. Make your business name, address, and phone number identical across your profile, website, and every directory.
6. Your service areas are not set (or your address is)
Service-area businesses that show a home address, or set no service areas at all, confuse Google's location signals. If customers come to you, show the address. If you go to customers, hide the address and set the cities and ZIP codes you actually serve.
7. You are violating guidelines and do not know it
Keyword-stuffed business names ("Best Plumber Tampa Cheap 24/7"), fake addresses, or duplicate listings can trigger a ranking filter or a suspension — sometimes without any notification. Use your real business name, one listing per location, and real details everywhere.
How long until rankings improve?
Fixes 1 through 6 usually show movement within 2 to 4 weeks; reviews compound over months. If nothing moves after 6 weeks of a fully fixed profile, the issue is usually off-profile: weak website content, no local citations, or a genuinely stronger competitor you need to outwork, not out-trick.
