7 empty Google Business Profile fields costing you calls
Most businesses fill in their name and hours, then stop. These 7 neglected fields are where competitors quietly pull ahead.
When I audit a Google Business Profile, the same 7 fields are empty almost every time. Each one is a place where Google could show your business to a ready-to-call customer — and does not, because there is nothing to show. Here they are, and what each costs you.
- Services. The highest-impact empty field. Every service you offer, listed with a plain description, becomes a keyword your profile can rank for. A plumber with 3 services listed competes for 3 searches; one with 30 listed competes for 30.
- Products. If you sell anything — parts, equipment, packages — list it. Product listings show photos and prices right on your profile and catch shoppers who never reach your website.
- Attributes. The checkboxes: women-led, veteran-led, wheelchair accessible, LGBTQ+ friendly, appointment required, and dozens more. They filter searches and they build trust before the first click. Most businesses never open the tab.
- Q and A. Customers ask questions on your profile and anyone can answer — including wrong answers from strangers. Seed your own FAQs, answer every real question, and check back monthly. An empty Q and A invites misinformation.
- Business hours — the full version. Not just Monday to Friday. Holiday hours, special hours, "open 24 hours" if true. Google shows your hours before your phone number; wrong hours send callers to competitors.
- Photos. Profiles with 100+ real photos get dramatically more direction requests and calls than profiles with a logo and three pictures. Team, storefront, work in progress, finished jobs — real, recent, and regular.
- Business description. 750 characters to say what you do, where, and for whom, in your own words. It does not directly rank you, but it converts the people Google sends you. A blank description is a blank first impression.
Why do these fields matter for calls, not just rankings?
Because the Maps listing is the new homepage for local businesses. Most searchers never click through to your website — they call, message, or get directions straight from the profile. Every field you fill is another reason to choose you over the competitor whose profile looks abandoned.
How long does it take to fill them all?
About two focused hours for the full set: services and products take the longest because the copy should be real, not filler. Photos and reviews are the ongoing part — add photos monthly and keep asking for reviews. Do the two hours once, then maintain.
